Access Code
Learn to code while creating a digital tool or game of your choice.
Want to design and program your own Tamagotchi or Flappy Bird Game? …remember those? What about a fun way to learn about mathematical concepts like chance and probability, collect data, or even explore scientific models by building your own game?
In this module, students will be introduced to algorithms, electronic circuits, and the basics of coding as they work to program their own digital tool or game, linked to one of our exhibitions or to their current unit of study. With plenty of free time to experiment, test and iterate, students will be able to use their new skills to add features to their programs, and imagine where this could take them in the future.
Tackle this in a single module for those students who already have some coding skills, or just want to dip their toe in the water. For students to really get the most out of this module though, we would recommend at least two modules. Or spread the fun across a term as an ongoing project for your students.

+ Students will…
Work through an introduction to algorithms as students ‘program’ a teacher to make a jam sandwich with a series of hand-written instructions.
Work through the development of a program using either block code or JavaScript.
Use their skills to adapt, add, and iterate new features of the program.

What isn’t made better by turning it into a game? While this module can be run as a completely self-contained project, it’s made even better by taking on the themes and knowledge of any of our other tours, modules, or even the units that your students are exploring in their subjects back at school. If you’re looking for recommendations though, we would suggest using one of our MENTAL or SWARM tours as a jumping-off point.
