DISTRACTION
26.07.25 – 20.12.25
DISTRACTION will plug into the streaming torrent of content and the places our brains go when we want to focus on anything but the thing. You know… that thing you’re supposed to be doing right now? Your distraction of choice could be scrolling through videos, daydreaming or escaping into a digital universe. When we are bouncing around the whirring, flashing pinball machine of existence – is our wayward attention a way of coping with the chaos? With a hundred tabs open and endless avenues to explore, experience the playful ways we distract ourselves from the more serious parts of life. We have access to more than we can ever absorb, how do we harness the cacophony of content and find meaning within it?
If you’re looking to book your school into DISTRACTION head to our Learning Experiences page for more information and how to book.
EMERGENCE(Y)
02.26 – 07.26
EMERGENCE(Y) springs forth in response to a rapidly changing world. As we enter a future troubled by global crises, humans and non-humans must adapt in order to survive in the face of climate change, health challenges and displacement. Looking forward, back and all around, how might we change in response to the dramatic shifts occurring on this planet we call home, and within the bodies we inhabit? Will we refashion a new way of living, or will we abandon ship? As the future (b)looms, the environment - and ourselves - will look drastically different. Cities are growing and densifying, natural landscapes are shrinking. Will we re-wild? Re-create? Re-emerge into a new world? Surviving and thriving is the goal, how are we going to achieve it?
BLAK C.O.R.E. collab
08.26 – 12.26
Science Gallery Melbourne and BLAK C.O.R.E. which are part of the Museums and Collections Department, are planning a collaborative creative and cultural happening/exhibition for July–December 2026. Trailblazers in multi-disciplinary creative fields are being commissioned to produce something for the happening – sometimes independently or at times collaborate with each other.
The BLAK C.O.R.E vision is to realise systemic change by reimagining how First Nations knowledges, cultural materials and communities are held within institutional spaces of museums, galleries and universities that also connect and are embedded within international diasporic communities. This collaboration aims to reimagine the gallery and museum space to break down systemic ways of presenting and performing creative practices.
As a place that nurtures diversity, collaboration, experimentation and cross-disciplinary engagement, Science Gallery Melbourne is delighted to be collaborating with BLAK C.O.R.E.
