STEAM Careers Online Forum: Emerging Tech

Details

Year Level: 8–12

Capacity: Flexible

Cost: Free to all schools

This is a careers forum with purpose. Each term, Science Gallery Melbourne will introduce your students to inspiring people who work to solve some of our most pressing global and local challenges that we as a community face.

Students will hear not only about career journeys and industry connections, but how these professionals work across science, technology, engineering, arts and maths and use a range of transferable skills in the ways they work to make a difference in the world.

In the third STEAM Careers Forum, we focus on transdisciplinary careers relating to some of the emerging technologies explored in our current exhibition, SWARM. Think artificial intelligence, robotics, big data and coding.

Register for you and your students below to receive the resource weblink to watch the recorded session in class time.

Introducing our panellists and emcee…

Bonnie Shaw is Co-founder and Chief Impact Officer of Place Intelligence - a startup that builds machine learning tools to deliver deep intelligence about how people use places over time. Place Intelligence provides data and insights to government agencies, design, engineering, and professional services firms, global brands, and disaster recovery groups to inform design, strategic policy and evidence based decision making. Bonnie originally trained as an urban designer to shape landscapes and cities, but after she created a surprise hit game, she was diverted into a career in technology. Over the 20+ years of her career, Bonnie has founded six businesses and non-profits, been appointed as adjunct professor at three universities, and worked with arts and media organisations, banks, global brands, and government agencies (including the Obama Whitehouse and NASA).

EMCEE: Jess Vovers is a radically hopeful ceramicist, maker, secret poet, and doctor of biochemical engineering. Terrified by the realities of climate change, Jess focused their doctoral research on bio-based alternatives to fossil fuel solvents in the extraction of pharmaceuticals from plant matter. Beyond research, Jess is a scifi-fantasy dork nerd who is passionate about diversity and creativity in STEM. They seek to explore the plurality of queer, neurodiverse, regenerative futures and how we can enmesh art and science to cultivate them. Jess is also a hair model, avid meditator, tutor, and experienced speaker. They are driven by curiosity, awe and connection, and can often be found settling in with clay in soft coloured lighting, or wandering in the bush near the Birrarung with a thermos of tea searching for mushrooms and fluid dynamic patterns.
