What makes a space ‘safe’? And how do spaces encourage specific behaviour? In this workshop and tour, students will work in teams to create a Comfort Room for their peers using an empathy-driven design thinking process.

Students will start the day exploring and participating in thought-provoking discussions and activities as part of a facilitator-led tour of BREAK THE BINARIES. BREAK THE BINARIES presents a playful and kaleidoscopic view of genders, identity and their relationship with science and technology, creativity, culture, race and sexuality. Using their exhibition experience as inspiration, particularly Ash Hern’s work (un)comfy, students will learn through doing by applying Design Thinking, using data and insights from their peers, to build prototypes of their Comfort Room before pitching their ideas for feedback.

Key Themes: Design; architecture; psychology; sociology; mental health; additional themes explored as part the exhibition tour.

  • Identify and connect the key themes and concepts explored in the BREAK THE BINARIES exhibition through the facilitator-led tour.

Participate in facilitator-led group activities and discussions that prompt critical thinking and provoke curiosity.

Learn and apply the principles of Design Thinking through guided discussion and activities.

Work as a team to design a ‘comfort room’ tailored for their peers using empathic design.

Create a prototype and present their team’s pitch for their design, responding to and giving structured peer feedback.

Informally engage with university students – who make up our facilitator team - and learn about diverse post-school pathways.
