GENETICS GYM (SS18)

ADAM PEACOCK (United Kingdom)

Would you CRISPR your genes?

With continued genetic technology development such as CRISPR-cas 9 and epigenetics, we have the ability to design much of our bodies and cognitive dispositions, currently held back by government ethical legislation. The project imagines a scenario in which these ethical boundaries become grey-areas in context of commercial pharmaceutical's affecting ethics, asking how and why we might change ourselves if we had the ability to do so? Why do we strive to be anything other than who we currently are? This is a project about philosophy, ethnicity, genetics, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, fashion and theory and consumer psychology. The five vector line illustrations have been developed over two years with Psychology Prof. Carolyn Mair (London College of Fashion), illustrating how the cognitive hard-wiring of the human brain might interact with socio-political theories of consumption, leading to consumption choice - or the desire to be different or ‘better’ than you currently are.
