Local artist Dylan Martorell brings the gallery to life with interactive sound sculptures made from upcycled objects and robotics.
Everything is built to be played, triggered, and reimagined – so dive in and make some noise. Jam with a wild mix of acoustic instruments, percussive modular synths, and responsive sculptures that light up and shift as you move through the space.
Powered by upcycling, DIY spirit, and experimental tech, Martorell’s work invites you to explore how sound travels and transforms – across places, cultures, and materials – turning into something shared, collective, and alive.
On Friday night, Dylan Martorell’s sculptures come alive as part of Now or Never with performances by Genevieve Fry and Tarquin Manek weaving through the space. Prefer a slower exploration? Drop in on Saturday to interact with the installation and create your own soundscape to a future world.
Science Gallery Melbourne’s latest exhibition EMERGENCE[Y] explores adaptation, innovation and resilience in a rapidly changing world, showing 6 June – 5 December 2026.
Now or Never is an 11-day festival of new dimensions showcasing art, ideas, sound and technology.
Presented with Now or Never.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Dylan Martorell
Transience, improvisation and collaboration form the basis of Dylan Martorell’s music-based art practice. Focusing on the use of site-specific gleaned materials and incorporating elements of upcycling, DIY culture, robotics and alternative power sources, Martorell’s projects focus on concepts of transience, sustainability and community based group dynamics. Housed within the conceptual framework of musical diaspora, his work is drawn to ways in which music travels through space and is affected by changes in geography, climate, culture and materials to become an agent for cross-cultural reciprocation.
