Hyperfocus Masterclass with Sandy Ma

  • 4-hour session on 1 or 2 May Science Gallery Melbourne at the University of Melbourne Parkville, VIC, 3010 Australia (map)

Amplified Conductive Embroidery

Level up in this masterclass, where you will learn techniques for transforming a soft sculpture into an electronic artwork.

For creatives seeking a skill boost or curious about how things work, this masterclass digs into the nitty-gritty of Sandy’s practice. Sandy will share her insights into designing artworks experienced through touch, inviting softness into our technological relationships.

During this interactive session, you will learn how electronics can be assembled to produce unique sound and light responses.  Sandy will guide you through an activity combining textiles and circuitry, while inviting you to reflect on how computers have influenced your life. Then you will have an opportunity to make your very own touch-responsive soft sculpture to take home.

This workshop involves embroidery and sewing. We recommend you have a basic understanding of electronics and feel confident using a needle and thread.

Prior to the workshop, Sandy asks participants to bring a personal story that reflects your relationship with computers.

This is a paid four-hour masterclass. All workshop materials are provided, including fabrics, needles, wool, conductive thread, wires and circuit boards. The session is suitable for adults and young people aged 15 years and over, with assistance available throughout.

Sessions run on the following dates:

  • Friday 1 May, 1–5pm

  • Saturday 2 May, 1–5pm

Ticket prices:

  • General Admission: $50

  • Sandy Ma (she/they) is a multidisciplinary artist and educator living and working on unceded Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country. Her practice integrates textiles, sound, and performance to explore embodied knowledge and playful resistance. Sandy hopes to create inclusive interdisciplinary learning spaces that centre creative and critical thinking through her work as an artist educator. Her collaborative and research-driven work often engages public audiences through participatory installations.

In a world in which our devices are becoming increasingly distant, unknowable and unrepairable, Cris's installations encourage participants to engage and interact with circuits, data and sound with physicality and curiosity. Cris aims to return audiences to a nostalgic golden age of tactile buttons, knobs, sliders, switches, clicks and beeps, and champion the human-friendly principles of design that they represent.
