Event Horizon Symposium

The ‘event horizon’ is the boundary defining the region of space around a black hole from which nothing (not even light) can escape. In other words, the escape velocity for an object within the event horizon exceeds the speed of light. The name arises since it is impossible to observe any event taking place inside it – it is a horizon beyond which we cannot see.

While our current earthly experience is one of an event that feels unable to be seen beyond, the Centre of Visual Art presents an Event Horizon symposium. Comprising of multimedia content released across two days on a specially designed page of the Centre of Visual Art website, this will pull focus out to cosmic events.

Ranging from Zoom presentations to article excerpts, plenary discussions and podcasts, this will be a hub for all facets of the Event Horizon discussion.

Day 1
Focus on the astronomical notion of the Event Horizon (from both scientific and arts perspectives);
Day 2
Focus more symbolic reading of 'event horizon' as a tipping point or moment of transition/change (from both scientific and arts perspectives).
