SCI CURIOUS EVENT REVIEWS... THE LIFE CODE
The Life Code - AI PERFECTION through the elements
Combining a pop-up exhibition/showcase with a panel discussion, The Life Code examines, through the lens of AR/VR projects, how Indigenous knowledge systems (which find perfection from the elements) can lead to more engaging and inclusive technologies, whilst also underscoring the importance of Indigenous science in AI.

This event was a real eye opener, and it changed my outlook on the apparently limitless ways in which we can study science. Many aspects of science are based around discovering new things, uncovering new knowledge and using this to explore and understand much of our world and beyond. Majority of scientific studies are not usually taught to focus on the past, but by doing exactly that we can use this abundance of knowledge to advance even further into the future. The fascination with this event was in the way it was shown that using our knowledge of the past we can transform our future into something much more sustainable and economical. As discussed, Aboriginal history is definitely not the stuff of fairy tales, but we can learn so very much from these people. One of the most relevant topics in the world today is the issue of sustainability. Indigenous people have always lived as one with nature, and sustainability is simply part of their way of life. In today’s world, sustainability has the potential to eradicate global warming and pollution; it fixes loss of species and countless other problems we face. We need to learn more about sustainability by looking back into the past, studying the Aboriginal people and their way of living. We can now do this through artificial intelligence and virtual reality, by providing an even better insight, a virtually real life experience, obtaining essential knowledge enabling people to study and incorporate this knowledge into their own everyday lives. This event opened my mind to a whole new way of thinking, by linking the past with our future!

The Life Code explores how science can intersect with the Indigenous perspective in order to improve environmental sustainability and enhance the outlook of the world culturally. It looks at using technology as a way to preserve the Indigenous cultural heritage stories of Australia’s First Nation in a virtual world. With the inclusion of interactivity, people can experience and immerse themselves into the Indigenous perspective in a time before the arrival of the first settlers.
Virtual Songlines use of virtual reality as a way to document and preserve their cultural heritage greatly piqued my interest. It brings thought into how else we can utilise emerging technology like AR and VR, especially in games, to capture as much of our histories past in order for it to not be lost in our future. Creating virtual experiences of our history can be a great way for students to learn about the past in schools. We’ve already seen the use of Minecraft in education, teaching code, design and geography so why not take the extra step and bring in immersive virtual historical worlds? The technology is already there, we just need developers to create these virtual worlds.
